Treatment largely preserves the native antigenicity of the erythocytes while rendering the cells generally resistant to lysis by osmonic shock, freeze-thawing or immune hemolysis. These cells are used directly in hemagglutination procedures, or may be coupled with various proteins for hemagglutination testing.
