- Cytokeratin 8 (KRT8) is a type II intermediate filament protein of ~52 kDa that pairs with cytokeratin 18 to form heteropolymers in simple epithelial cells. Together, these keratins provide structural stability to epithelial tissues and contribute to cellular resilience under mechanical and apoptotic stress. Beyond their cytoskeletal role, KRT8 and KRT18 participate in intracellular signaling, apoptosis regulation, and stress response pathways. Abnormal expression or post-translational modification of KRT8 has been linked to a variety of human diseases, including chronic liver disease, inflammatory disorders, and multiple carcinomas. Because of its restricted expression in simple epithelia and frequent upregulation in tumors, KRT8 serves as both a diagnostic marker and a functional mediator of epithelial cell biology and disease progression.
