UXS1 (UDP-Glucuronate Decarboxylase 1) is a Protein Coding gene. The UXS1 gene, located on 2q12.2, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, and rat, etc. UXS1 belongs to the UDP-glucuronic acid decarboxylase subfamily and is strongly conserved from bacteria to humans. 3 alternatively spliced human isoforms have been reported. This gene encodes an enzyme found in the perinuclear Golgi which catalyzes the synthesis of UDP-xylose used in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis on proteoglycans. UXS1 is widely expressed in the kidney, placenta, and other tissues. Diseases associated with UXS1 include Optic Atrophy 10 With Or Without Ataxia, Mental Retardation, And Seizures, and Walker-Warburg Syndrome.
