PLIN3 (Perilipin 3) is a Protein Coding gene. The PLIN3 gene, located on 19p13.3, is conserved in chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, and frog. PLIN3, one of the members of the perilipin family, is involved in the formation and accumulation of lipid droplets. The protein encoded by this gene interacts with the cytoplasmic domains of both cation-independent and cation-dependent mannose 6-phosphate receptors (MPRs) and is required for endosome-to-Golgi transport. This protein also binds directly to the GTPase RAB9 (RAB9A), a member of the RAS oncogene family. The interaction with RAB9 has been shown to increase the affinity of this protein for its cargo. Diseases associated with PLIN3 include Mental Retardation, Autosomal Dominant 38, and Suppressor Of Tumorigenicity 3.
