This gene is a member of the mucin family and encodes amembrane bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein. This proteinis anchored to the apical surface of many epithelia by atransmembrane domain, with the degree of glycosylationvarying with cell type. The protein serves a protectivefunction, binding to pathogens, as well as functioning in acell signaling capacity. Overexpression, aberrantintracellular localization, and changes in glycosylation of thisprotein have been associated with carcinomas. Alternatetranscriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms,have been characterized.
