Description: Claudins, such as CLDN7, are involved in the formation of tight junctions between epithelial cells. Tight junctions restrict lateral diffusion of lipids and membrane proteins, and thereby physically define the border between the apical and basolateral compartments of epithelial cells (Zheng et al., 2003).[supplied by OMIM]
Function: Plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space.
Subunit Structure: Directly interacts with TJP1/ZO-1, TJP2/ZO-2 and TJP3/ZO-3 (By similarity). The phosphorylated form interacts with EPCAM (PubMed:16054130). Does not interact with CD81 (PubMed:20375010).
Post-translational Modifications: Phosphorylated.
Similarity: Belongs to the claudin family.
