Function: RNA-binding component of the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (mt-SSU) that plays a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis (PubMed:22841715). Stimulates mitochondrial mRNA translation of subunit components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (PubMed:22841715). Binds to the mitochondrial 12S rRNA (12S mt-rRNA) and tRNA(Glu) (PubMed:22841715). Involved also in positive regulation of cell proliferation and tumor cell growth (PubMed:28714366).
Subunit Structure: Component of the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (mt-SSU) (PubMed:22841715, PubMed:25838379). Mature mammalian 55S mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small (28S) and a large (39S) subunit (PubMed:25838379). The 28S small subunit contains a 12S ribosomal RNA (12S mt-rRNA) and 30 different proteins (PubMed:25838379). The 39S large subunit contains a 16S rRNA (16S mt-rRNA), a copy of mitochondrial valine transfer RNA (mt-tRNA(Val)), which plays an integral structural role, and 52 different proteins (PubMed:25838379). Interacts with NOA1 (PubMed:19103604).
