The NFKB complex is inactivated by I-kappa-B proteins that keep it trapped in the cytoplasm. Phosphorylation of serine residues on the I-kappa B proteins mark them for ubiquitination and destruction, and NFKB translocates to the nucleus where it binds DNA.
