TAOK1 is a TAO type protein kinase. TAOK1 enhances microtubule dynamics through the activation of MARK (microtubule affinity regulating kinase) that leads to phosphorylation and detachment of tau and other MAPs from microtubules causing destabilization. TAOK1 also interacts via downstream targets such as JNK and ROCK-1 to regulate apoptotic morphology associated with the execution phase of apoptosis, which involves reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton.
