The protein is comprised of five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane region and a highly conserved cytoplasmic tail. Alterations in the CDH3 gene have been linked to hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy (HJMD), and aberrant expression of CDH3 protein has been associated with several types of malignancies, including prostate and breast carcinomas.
