Beta1 spectrin is primary member of the cytoskeletal network in the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Beta1 spectrin is involved in cell membrane organization and stability and associates with the proteins band 4.1 and actin to form the cytoskeletal superstructure of the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Diseases associated with this gene include Spherocytosis and Elliptocytosis.
