Lubricin, also called superficial zone protein (SZP) and proteoglycan 4 (PRG4), is a large water soluble glycoprotein present in synovial fluid and on the surface of articular cartilage, meniscus and tendon where it wraps around bone. It plays an important role in joint lubrication and synovial homestasis. (See Schumacher et al1994, Schumacher et al1999, Flannery et al 1999 and Rees et al2002)
