Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone sythesized by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid. It belongs to the calcitonin like protein family. This peptide hormone is secreted by parafollicular cells of thyroid gland humans. Calcitonin participates in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. It may help to identify emedullary thyroid cancer. Staining for calcitonin may be used for the identification of a spectrum of C cell proliferative abnormalities ranging from C cell hyperplasia to invasive tumors
